PROCESS
STAGE #1
Step 1: Research
EVERYONE will have to research behavioral AND physical adaptations of:
1. Elephants
2. Polar Bears
Next, you will select 4 different animals to research. These 4 other animals MUST be animals that are at the Columbus Zoo, because you will be using this information whilevisiting the Zoo. Therefore, you are to research 6 different animals. Your research should include:
1. Physical Adaptations
2.Behavioral Adaptations
3.Reasons why the animals have the
physical and behavioral
adaptations that you found
4.Picture or pictures of the animals you
researched
5.Any other pertinent information about the
animal
*** Be creative!!! Explore all different kinds of animals! THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!***
Step 2: Compile Information
Individually you will be creating case files for each animal that you researched. Remember each case file should include the above information as well as the name of the animal you researched.
You will need to go through all of your research and begin to compile your case files.
Step 3: Create Case Files
You will be given a manila folder to create your very own case files
Each animal sheet must be typed and your paper must be written in paragraph format
BE CREATIVE with how you present the information within the manila folder. There are many different ways to create this.
Be sure to decorate the front and back cover of the manila folder! REMEMBER: YOU are an adaptation investigator!! This is SERIOUS business!!!
Step 4: Use case files at the Zoo
REMEMBER: This is for you and your group mates to use at the Zoo! Do no forget to bring it with you on our visit to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
STAGE 2:
Step 1: Collaborate
You will be placed in groups of 4. While at the Columbus Zoo, you will be working together with this group all day long. You are now a TEAM of adaptation investigators trying to solve the adaptation problem the Zoo needs information on!
Before heading to the Zoo, as a group, you will pick 6 different animals that you would like to observe while at the Zoo. As a class, we will be going over these animals so that no group is observing and researching the same exact animals.
Step 2: Observation
With the 6 animals your group has picked, you are to observe those animals. You must spend a minimum of 10 minutes observing each animal.
Remember you are to be observing:
1.Physical adaptations
2.Behavioral adaptations
3.Why the animal has these
adaptations
***REMEMBER….use your case files that you take with you. This will help you identify the adaptations while you are observing the animal. Please use your research…it is there to act as an aid to help
you!!!***
Step 3: Record information
This is the most IMPORTANT step of observing the animals at the Zoo. Be sure you are recorded and writing down everything that you are
observing about the animal.
EVERYONE needs to be writing down their observations. YOU ALL ARE ADAPTATIONINVERSTIGATORS!!!
That means you need to bring with you:
1. Pen/pencil
2.Paper
***NOTE: This will be apart of your grade. I will also be making sure that you come prepared to record information at the Zoo. Having something to write with as well as paper will be part of your grade!***
Step 4: Compile notes as a group
Begin to go through everyone’s notes and observations of the 6 animals that you observed while visiting the Columbus Zoo
Make sure to include information from all categories listed above in step 2.
You are more than welcome to add any other interesting stories or observations that you made while observing the animals. This will make your presentation fun and exciting!
Step 5: Create PowerPoint presentation
All 6 animals need to be included in your presentation. Each animal you present should have information about:
1.Physical adaptations
2.Behavioral adaptations
3.Reasons why they have
these
4.Picture of animal
5.Any fun information you would like to
share
PowerPoint should be visually interesting and engaging. BE CREATIVE with this and HAVE FUN creating the PowerPoint
Step 6: Present PowerPoint
Every team member must have a speaking part in the presentation
The presentation should be a minimum of 8 minutes long. Obviously, the presentation can be longer.
Presentation must be free of spelling and grammar errors and slides must be easy to read
The PowerPoint must have all the parts that are listed in step 5
After the presentation you will turn in 3 things to me:
1. PowerPoint presentation Slides
2. Observation notes of entire group
3. Manila case folders of every group member
Resources are very important to help you get started with all of these processes. I have provided you with several different resources that you can use. Click on RESOURCES to contiune.
